PHP To Challenge J2EE and .NET

Sun doesn't have enough problems.

Zend Technologies Inc, the keeper of PHP, a constituent of LAMP, the multi-headed god of open source, is taking on J2EE, one of the last remaining places where Sun still shines, seeking to replace it.

PHP is also a rival of Microsoft's .NET, but Microsoft shops tend to be more dyed-in-the-wool, across-the-board Microsoft adherents and so harder to dislodge, according to Zend marketing VP Pamela Roussos.

According to Forrester Research, by 2006 22% of all enterprise apps will probably be written in J2EE, 13% in .NET, 56% in both and 9% in something else. Zend is aiming to be that 9% and more and whatever progress it makes is likely to come out of Sun's hide, with Zend feeding off of J2EE's overweening complexity
